What is Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)? Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is a condition when a non-diabetic woman get diabetes during her pregnancy. Though it can happen during any time of your pregnancy but is more common during your second trimester. It is not dangerous if diagnosed on time and well treated. This can eliminate any risk that can occur during or after the birth of your baby. What are the causes of Gestational Diabetes? There are no specific causes of this condition. Any woman can get it during her pregnancy but women with below conditions are at higher risk: 1- If you are more than 35 years of age. 2- If you have any family history of diabetes. 3- If your previous baby had a higher weight (usually more than 4.5 kgs). 4- If you are overweight. 5- If you were diagnosed to have gestational diabetes during your previous pregnancy. 6- If your family origins are from south Asia, Africa, China, or Middle Eastern. Do pregnancy symptoms worsen in Expectant Dad?
Pregnancy is often followed by lot of its own symptoms like cramps, nausea, mood swings, food cravings, depression etc. Its always an interesting question whether the expecting dad also suffers any of these symptoms along with his wife? From time to time, researchers have been studying this topic to understand whether this is just an assumption or a reality. The complications during pregnancy differ in each pregnant woman. It can be mild or severe. Some women may experience complication during pregnancy. Complications are the health problems of the mom or the baby that occur during pregnancy. Some common complications that mom and fetus may experience during pregnancy are: High Blood Pressure: High blood pressure or hypertension is a complication of the pregnant woman that affects the baby. High blood pressure can cause other complications like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes which affects both mom and the child. Before delivery, tell your doctor clearly about your medical history and if you had high blood pressure earlier. High blood pressure is a serious complication that should be treated. Anemia: Anemia is a condition that occurs if the normal number of healthy red blood cells is lower. Women with anemia can feel more tiredness or will be more weak. Iron and folic acid supplements are given to women with anemia. You need to include diet which is high in iron. Proper treatments should be taken to maintain the normal level of healthy red blood cells.
