Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy. Almost half of the women pregnant complained of the same. The reason behind this is the ongoing hormonal changes in your body. These hormones make your muscles relaxed leading to even relaxation of muscles in your digestive tracts which keeps the food to hang around longer.

Treatment of Constipation during pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when you need to avoid medicines as much as possible. In case of constipation, few lifestyle changes can help you get some relief:

1- Improve your diet: Include fiber-rich foods like whole-grain cereal, whole wheat bread, pulses, brown rice, fruits, and vegetables. A regular fiber-rich diet will add a difference to your digestion in the long run.

2- Drink plenty of water: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Try drinking warm water if the constipation is too much.

3- Avoid Iron Supplements: Constipation can also occur due to iron supplements you take during pregnancy. If the iron is too high in the supplement you are taking, consult your doctor and change your supplement.

4- Exercise regularly. Regular exercise like walking, aquanatal, yoga, etc. It can help reduce constipation. Try to be active during your pregnancy as this helps keep your overall system active.

5- Don’t hold if you feel the urge: Whenever you feel the urge the go to the bathroom, go immediately. Don’t hold yourself if you feel the urge to. Even if you are working, you should go, people will understand as these are common things to happen during pregnancy.

Can constipation turn serious during pregnancy?

Sometimes constipation can lead to hemorrhoids, in such case, you can speak to the doctor. They can suggest some medicine to apply which can ease the problem. Hemorrhoids usually go on their own after you deliver the baby.

You should avoid putting too much pressure while in the toilet. In case, there is bleeding or mucus present in your stool, consult your doctor.
